Is a checkered past a plus or a minus for a boxer?

I was just watching the 1971 George Foreman vs. Luis Piris fight and in the intro Brian Kenny commented on how Foreman was in a lot of trouble fro fighting in the streets. Then, I thought of Bernard Hopkins and Dwight Muhammad Qawi...any opinions?
