Good Christians, have you ever been a victim of a violent or heinous crime?

If so, how do you explain it? Iis that something God allowed to happen to you for the sake of teaching you a 'lesson' about life? And what did you learn exactly? I'm sure someone will mention free-will, but it's safe to say that most victims never had the luxury of choosing not to be victimized.
