I live in a bachelor unit. My neighbor threw my bookshelf I kept on the patio in the garbage -what should I do?

I noticed yesterday that my upstairs neighbor threw my bookshelf and two chairs into the garbage that I kept outside on my patio without asking me. Should I talk to the landlord? What kind of recourse do I have?
